Why are sundays excluded from the reckoning of the 40 days of lent?

Jesus Christ rose from the dead on Easter Sunday and all Sundays are to be celebrated as days of rejoicing even during Lent.

Lent starts on Ash Wednesday, lasts 40 days not counting Sundays and ends on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter.

In 2008, Ash Wednesday fell on February 6 and Easter will fall on March 23.

If you give something up for Lent then you do not have to give it up on Sundays.

With love in Christ. Why are sundays excluded from the reckoning of the 40 days of lent?
move your question, its not a beer question, its a religious question. Why are sundays excluded from the reckoning of the 40 days of lent?
Because sundays are a very holy day and its also a day of rest. Why are sundays excluded from the reckoning of the 40 days of lent?
Because Sunday is a day to Rejoice. So your abstinence from -whatever- is lifted. Lent is actually longer than 40 days.

And tell Bubbles that it's a beer question if that's what you chose to give up.
Traditionally, you are supposed to abstain EVERY Sunday.
