Haven't read them, but there is a four book series called the Pellinor Series by Alison Croggon, I really liked it. The series focuses on a girl called Maerad, who was a slave but was rescued by a Bard, on the "good" or Light side, and work magic. She turns out to be "the One" and is a powerful Bard, fighting the Dark.
